Richard S. Tyler

Richard S. Tyler is an internationally recognized audiologist and researcher, driven by a lifelong fascination with hearing and a deep commitment to people living with tinnitus and hyperacusis. He trained as a clinical audiologist at the University of Western Ontario before completing his Ph.D. in psychoacoustics at the University of Iowa. After several years at the Institute of Hearing Research in the United Kingdom, he returned to Iowa, where he has spent decades as a professor in both the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

What makes his work distinctive is the way it bridges science and care. At a time when tinnitus was widely dismissed as unmeasurable and untreatable, Tyler chose to engage with that complexity head-on. He developed measurement tools that are now used worldwide — including the Tinnitus Primary Functions Questionnaire and the Spatial Hearing Questionnaire — giving clinicians a shared language to describe what patients actually experience. His research focuses on quantifying tinnitus, identifying the subtypes hidden beneath that single label, and refining the combinations of counseling and sound therapy that meaningfully help people.

His work sits at a unique intersection of clinical audiology, psychoacoustics, and innovation. With more than 290 peer-reviewed publications, multiple authoritative books on tinnitus and cochlear implants, and the annual International Management of the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Patient Conference he hosts in Iowa, he has shaped a generation of clinicians and researchers. At the same time, he continues to see patients each week at his Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic — a deliberate choice, rooted in his conviction that good research begins and ends with what people experience in real life.

Ultimately, Richard S. Tyler is driven by a clear belief: tinnitus care deserves the same scientific rigor, dedication, and humanity as any other medical field. By consistently weaving together research, education, and direct patient care, he has not only advanced the field itself, but also transformed the outlook for countless people living with tinnitus and hyperacusis.
