Getting Started
Where can I download Freequency?
Freequency is available in both the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android). Search for 'Freequency' or use the download links on our website at freequency.app.
Which devices are compatible with Freequency?
On iPhone, Freequency works on devices running iOS 17 or higher — including the iPhone XS, XR, 11, SE (2nd generation), 12, 13, SE (3rd generation), 14, and 15. You can check if your device supports iOS 17 in your phone's settings. On Android, your device needs to support ARCore. You can check the full list of compatible Android devices at developers.google.com/ar/devices.
Is Freequency free to use?
The app is not free, but you can try the tone matching tool at no cost to see if your tinnitus sound is available in the app. If you're happy with the match, you can choose a monthly, yearly, or lifetime subscription. Newsletter subscribers may also receive special discount offers.
How do I set up my tinnitus tone?
When you first open the app, you'll be guided through the tone setup automatically. You can also access it later via My Profile → Manage Tones → Create New Tone. The tone maker lets you create and fine-tune a computer-generated tinnitus sound to match what you hear in your head. Always use earphones or a Bluetooth headset — not your phone's speaker — for the most accurate result. Step-by-step guides are available on our website for both iPhone and Android.
How Freequency Works
Is Freequency scientifically backed?
Yes. Freequency is grounded in scientific research demonstrating a positive effect on tinnitus loudness through the use of Virtual Reality. The approach is based on exposure therapy and the principles of neuroplasticity — training the brain through repeated exposure to reduce the emotional response to tinnitus. You can read more about the research on our website at freequency.app/over-freequency/.
How long will it take before I notice results?
Results vary from person to person. We generally suggest allowing 6–8 weeks (roughly 100 days) of daily sessions before drawing conclusions, based on studies showing that neuroplasticity takes approximately that long to develop through repeated training. Some users notice positive changes sooner, while for others it may take a bit longer. 29% of daily users report improvement after four weeks.
How often should I play per day?
We recommend one 10-minute session per day for 100 days. Playing more than once a day won't speed up your progress — your brain also needs time to rest and process between sessions.
What is the best time of day to do my session?
There's no single best time that works for everyone. Playing in the morning can be a mindful way to start your day. In the evening works well too, especially if you can rest afterward. What matters most is choosing a moment when you can truly tune in to how the session feels.
What should I do after a session?
Take a few minutes to unwind in whatever way suits you — a short walk, journaling, or simply sitting quietly. Avoid immediate stimulation like TV, scrolling through your phone, or busy activities. Giving your brain space to process after a session helps get the most out of the experience.
Your Tinnitus Experience
My tinnitus seems to be getting worse — is that normal?
It can be. With exposure therapy — the principle behind Freequency — it's not uncommon for the tinnitus experience to feel more intense at first. This is your emotional brain reacting to having its 'alarm signal' triggered. With repeated exposure, the goal is to reduce that aversive response over time, ultimately leading to improvement in both intensity and perceived burden. Most users experience a turning point between 2 and 4 weeks, though this varies. If you need a break, take one — even a few days off can help you return with a fresh perspective. Always listen to your body and give yourself the time you need.
I can't hear the tone during the game — is something wrong?
Not necessarily. If the tone matches your tinnitus perfectly, it may blend in and become hard to distinguish — which is actually a good sign. Sound localization is just one element of the experience; the visual environment also plays a major role in signaling to your brain that the tinnitus is safe rather than threatening. If you suspect noise cancellation is interfering, check your phone's settings under Accessibility → Audio & Visual and toggle Noise Cancellation on or off.
My tinnitus sound isn't available in the app
We've built an extensive sound library covering a wide range of frequencies, but we understand that some people experience sounds that fall outside of it. The closer the match, the more effective the experience — but even an approximate match can still be beneficial. Sound localization is just one part of the process; the immersive visual environment also contributes significantly to retraining your brain's response. If needed, you can try a subtle character adjustment so the tone is slightly different from your tinnitus. More information about tone setup is available at freequency.app/tonen-maken/.
Can I play with multiple tones at the same time?
Yes. In the tone manager, you can check multiple tones to combine them during your session. All checked tones will play together in the game. Find your tones under My Profile → Manage Tones.
App Features & Settings
What is a streak?
Your streak tracks how many consecutive days you've played. You'll find it in My Profile, shown as a flame icon. After each session, you're asked to rate how loud your tinnitus was that day using a slider — a colored flower is then assigned based on your rating. These flowers appear in your streak overview, giving you a visual history of whether your tinnitus loudness has decreased, stayed the same, or increased over time.
How do I change my notification preferences?
Go to My Profile → Change Preferences. Here you can set the time you'd like to be reminded to play, and turn streak reminders on or off.
How do I turn off the bird whistle sound?
This option is currently available for iPhone users only. In the Freequency preferences, you can toggle the 'Whistle when the bird is found' setting under the 'Practice' section.
My data has disappeared — what should I do?
Don't panic. After an update or app restart, the app may need a moment to sync. Close the app completely, wait a few minutes, then reopen it. Your data is most likely still there and will reappear once the sync completes.
How does Freequency handle my personal data?
Any data collected helps us understand whether Freequency works better or less well for specific types of tinnitus. All data is processed anonymously — your name or identity is never included in any conclusions or reports.
Subscription & Billing
What does a subscription cost?
Freequency is available at $16,99 per month or $149,99 per year. Newsletter subscribers may receive special discount offers.
What is included in a subscription?
With a subscription you get access to the full Freequency game as well as daily content from Professor Toon — including informational videos, scientific sources, animations, questionnaires, and contributions from guest experts. This daily content stops on the day your subscription ends.
What payment methods are accepted?
You need a recurring payment method linked to the App Store or Google Play — such as a credit card or PayPal. On iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping → Add Payment Method. On Android, go to your Google Play payment methods and tap Add Payment Method.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On iPhone, go to the subscriptions page in the App Store, tap your account, go to Subscriptions, select Freequency, and cancel. On Android, go to your subscriptions in Google Play, select Freequency, and tap Cancel Subscription. If you cancel within 3 days of signing up, you won't be charged.
How do I redeem a promo code?
Promo codes can only be used with a monthly or yearly subscription — not with the lifetime option. On Android: start the subscription flow, click 'Subscribe', then tap 'Redeem code' at the bottom of the payment screen and enter your code. On iPhone: go to Preferences → Manage Your Freequency Subscription → Redeem Offer Code, and enter your code.
Can I get a refund?
You can request a refund through the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) if you meet their refund conditions. Links to the refund request pages for both platforms are available on our help page.
Can I share my subscription with family members?
Yes, you can share your subscription with others through Apple's Family Sharing or Google Play's Family Library. Note that an iPhone subscription cannot be shared with Android users, and vice versa.
Can I transfer my account or subscription from iPhone to Android (or the other way around)?
Unfortunately this is not possible. The iPhone and Android apps are not compatible with each other, so your data and subscription cannot be transferred between platforms.
Availability & International Access
Freequency is not available in my country — how can I access it?
Freequency is currently only available in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States and may not appear in app stores in other countries. However, you can change your App Store or Google Play region to download the app from abroad. Instructions for doing this on iPhone and Android are available on our website.
