Product and app

The Netherlands

Jeffrey designs software using the principles of game design: test a lot, learn through play, and make every interaction feel right. He is responsible for Freequency's product and app, from the first sketch to every update. Every button, animation, and exercise passes through his hands before it appears on your screen.

Jeffrey Lanters is responsible for Freequency's product and app. His background is in games, and you can tell by the way he works. To him, designing software is not a matter of ticking off features, but of playing, watching what happens, and adjusting until it feels right. An exercise should not just work, it should also feel good, or nobody will do it a second time. He brought that way of working to Freequency, where the app was set up as a game from day one rather than as a medical form.

When the science showed that tinnitus has striking parallels with phantom pain, where mirror therapy makes the invisible visible, Jeffrey used game design to translate that insight into an app that places your tone into the space around you. What started as a prototype tested at the office grew into the app that is now played every day. That way of building has stayed: try first, believe later.

In practice, that means Jeffrey is involved everywhere. He sketches new activities, works out the flow of a session, decides how sound and image respond to each other, and tests every version himself before it goes to the stores. The small things get attention too: how a button responds, how a transition feels, and how much text fits on a screen. Those are exactly the details that decide whether someone still opens the app after a week.

He works closely with the rest of the team along the way. With Teun on what is clinically sound, with Maxime and Priscilla on how it looks, and with Martin on how it gets built. Jeffrey makes sure all those pieces stay one product, from the first sketch to every update. And when something does not feel good enough, it simply goes back to the drawing board.
